Why I Use Hermann Oak Leather

You may have noticed in my descriptions that I always say ECG holsters and accessories are made of Hermann Oak Leather. But why? What does it matter which company is selling the leather? After all, a cow is a cow. But you might be surprised at the difference high quality tanning and processing makes in the quality of the final product. Let’s take a deeper look at what makes premium leather worth the extra cost.
First, high quality leather is never bleached. This means there are no hidden blemishes. Unbleached leather takes up dye more evenly. The grain stays tight, which allows the leather to mold and tool exceptionally well. Many leathers, especially imported leathers, are bleached to hide scars and imperfections. Unfortunately, as soon as these bleached leathers are dyed or oiled, all the blemishes become visible again.
The second advantage of choosing premium leather is consistent thickness. If leather has inconsistencies in the thickness, it creates weak points in the final product. This can lead to stretching and even tearing. While no one wants their leather product to stretch or tear, this is particularly dangerous when dealing with holsters, sheaths, etc.
Finally, premium leather has fewer scars and imperfections, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing product. Because, if you are going to wear it every day, you want it to look good.
As you can see, high quality leather offers several advantages over inferior counterparts. But, why Hermann Oak specifically?
Hermann Oak is an industry leader in premium holster leather. A U.S. tannery, in business since 1881, they offer holster leather of the highest quality. Of course they aren’t the only source of high quality holster leather. But before you purchase a holster, it is certainly worth asking your craftsman which leather they use and why.
